CHAPTER 21
LIAM
There was no way in hell I was going to be late to the airport this time. Since the moment Mikaelaâs flight had taken off, Iâd been tracking it on a neat little app called FlightAware so I would know precisely the moment it touched down at the local airport. Before it even began to make its final descent, I was parked, out of my car, and on my way to the ground transportation area of the main terminal. Gone were the days when people used to get off the plane and run directly into their waiting loved oneâs arms, but this was the best I could do.
To make it even more special, Iâd made her one of those signs that the guys who drove the limos used. It always made me feel a little more special to see my last name written on a white piece of paper for some reason. I stood in line with the other people waiting to pick up their fares, though mine wouldnât be paying me in anything except for kissesâI hoped.
When I saw Mikaela come down the escalator, her carry-on suitcase beside her, I couldnât help the huge grin that spread across my face. She didnât see me at first. Her eyes darted across the crowd of people, looking for familiarity. It was the sign with her last name on it that caused her eyes to stop moving. Grinning, she lifted her gaze to meet mine, and then she started giggling.
Now that sheâd gotten the full effect of my sign, I put it down and rushed over to her. We got to have our ârunning across a field of flowers to embraceâ moment after all, it just wasnât quite the same as in all of those 1990-era rom-coms. Mikaela let go of her bag and wrapped her arms around me as I leaned down to kiss her cheek.
âNice touch,â she said, lifting her head to look at me. âThe sign, I mean.â
âWell, you know. I couldnât take any chances on you getting lost. If youâd gotten into a car with someone else, Iâm not sure what Iâd do.â I brushed her hair back from her face, so happy to see her again. I was afraid things might be a little awkward, but they didnât seem that way at all.
âI see youâre wearing a suit I havenât seen.â She smirked at me, her eyelashes fluttering.
âMy closet in Vancouver is a little bigger than the suitcase I lost,â I assured her. âAre you ready to go?â I took hold of her bag and started wheeling it toward the exit. âUnless, of course, youâd like to grab a cup of coffee you could almost spill on me.â It was my turn to give her a snide grin.
I was glad to hear her laugh. Slipping her fingers into my hand, she said, âActually, I already poured an entire cup on another guy. Heâs still back there cursing at me now.â She pointed over her shoulder toward the escalator.
